Chiropractic and Foot Health

The foot is our main contact with the ground.  It is an intricate symphony of motion.  The movement and stance is created by the coordination of 26 bones (one quarter of the bones in the human body are in the feet), and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments. When we walk, the foot goes through a shock absorbing phase (pronation) and a phase that stiffens the foot (supination) for springing forward into propulsion.  The cycle of these phases offer a range of activities, such as dance, power, change of direction, and control.  Balanced motion of the foot distributes forces throughout the foot evenly.  When this balance is disrupted, these forces can cause decreased function and such injuries as plantar fascitis, shin splints, and general foot pain.

Sports injuries commonly occur in the lower leg and foot.  Ankle and foot sprains are commonly treated to improve stability, pain relief, and decreased inflammation with improved healing times.  The approach used with the chiropractic adjustment is MELT: mobilization, elevation, Laser, and taping.
